The reference photo used to paint this painting was snapped by a family member while the wife was in hospice. It was surprisingly easy to work from despite the poor resolution. You can see so much about the relationship here. His cowboy hat tilted back, a little like John Wayne, with her hands clasped in approval. I don't know what they were talking about, but it was a sweet moment.

Here is a demonstration of a rose we painted in watercolor class. A lot of my students enjoy painting flowers, and this lovely rose was a great subject to work with. You can also see how this demo also teaches a lesson in value study, of light, middle and dark values.

Here is a demonstration of what I call "almost people," otherwise known as a figurative study. We used a terrific photograph from National Geographic magazine for the first exercise. And although we often simply use watercolor paint alone, we often include many elements of collage as well, such as tissue paper and other textured (acid-free) papers with these "almost people" paintings.
